CHAMP cargosystems introduces universal electronic reporting through its global customs gateway
26 October 2005
Geneva – CHAMP Cargosystems is introducing a universal standardized electronic customs reporting tool for cargo in response to rapidly expanding demands for advance reporting of air cargo shipment information.
Airlines required to meet the Canada Border Services Agency directive on advance reporting, scheduled to become effective in December 2005, will be among the first to benefit from the new CHAMP solution.
Known as the Global Customs Gateway, the CHAMP Cargosystems solution provides air cargo carriers with a single, common reporting destination. Each participating airline provides information to the Global Customs Gateway using existing cargo industry standard messaging. The Global Customs Gateway then performs the necessary data collection and construction of electronic reports as defined by each country’s customs authority.
Airlines and freight forwarders can connect to the Global Customs Gateway with complete confidence and security – achieving efficiency, flexibility, cost efficiencies and above all, compliance with customs requirements.
John Johnston, CEO of CHAMP Cargosystems, said, “Air cargo carriers are faced with everincreasing legal requirements imposed by various countries demanding electronic pre- notification of import and export freight. Currently, most import and export reporting is done
manually using paper documents. Electronic reporting speeds the process but lacks a worldwide standard. Each new country implementation requires modification of airline systems to comply with message formats, protocols and reporting rules. We have come up
with a very straightforward solution which simplifies all that for both customs authorities and airlines.”
The Canadian launch will be followed quickly by implementation for customs agencies in the US, Brazil and other countries identified by CHAMP Cargosystems 200-plus air cargo customers.
The Global Customs Gateway will have fully achieved its goal of providing a multi-country electronic reporting service by mid-2006, with continual expansion and refinement as and when countries announce new import and export rulings.
